Columbia is the capital of South Carolina, and is the seat of Richland County, located NW of the center of South Carolina. The Saluda River and Broad Rivers merge at Columbia to form the Congeree River. It is the second largest city in South Carolina, with a population of 136,632 as of the 2020 U.S. Census. Columbia hosted the South Carolina Secession Convention, making this the first state to leave the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.
Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina and Fort Jackson, the largest US Army installation for Basic Combat Training. Twenty miles to the east of the city near Eastover is the McEntire Joint National Guard Base operated by the U.S. Air Force.

Sumter South Carolina, also known as Gamecock City, lies east of Columbia, and is the seat of Sumter County with a population of 40,524. The city and county were named after General Thomas Sumter, the "Fighting Gamecock" of the American Revolutionary War. Sumter is home to Shaw Air Force Base.
